Start by placing the mixed dried fruit in a bowl and pouring the hot tea over it. Let it soak overnight or for at least 6 hours.
Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F) and line your loaf tin with greaseproof paper.
In a separate mixing bowl, sift the self-raising flour and mixed spice.
Stir in the beaten egg and soft brown sugar until the mixture is well combined.
Add the soaked fruit (including any remaining tea) and mix until everything is evenly distributed.
Pour the mixture into the prepared loaf tin.
Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 1/2 to 2 hours, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the bara brith to cool in the tin for a few minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
