Equipment

  • Mixing bowls (medium and large)
  • Electric mixer or whisk
  • 9-inch round cake pan
  • Spatula
  • Cooling Rack

Ingredients

For the cake

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup whole milk

For the sauce

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup heavy cream

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease your 9-inch round cake pan.
  • In a medium-sized mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add one egg at a time and mix well to incorporate well before adding the next one. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • In a separate large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In the butter mixture, gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with the milk. Just make sure to mix well after each addition.
  • Pour the batter into the cake pan that has been prepared and use a spatula to smooth the top surface.
  • Bake for approximately 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • While the cake is baking, prepare the sauce. Over medium heat, in a saucepan, melt the butter. Combine the granulated sugar and heavy cream, stirring them together, then heat the mixture until it reaches a boiling point. Lower the heat and let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Once the cake is out of the oven, allow it to cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a cooling rack.
  • While the cake is still warm, use a skewer or fork to poke holes all over the surface. Slowly pour the warm sauce over the cake, ensuring it seeps into the holes and covers the entire cake.
  • Let the cake cool completely before serving.
